The First Little Mayor of Hereford
In 2007 Hereford City Council decided to appoint a Little Mayor for Hereford, with the object of increasing public awareness of the role of the Mayor and City Council, and helping educate young people in the role of local government by increasing links between the Mayor of the day and the City’s schools.
Primary Schools throughout the City were invited to nominate a Year 6 pupil, and the very first Little Mayor to be elected was Dominic Fawcett of St. Francis Xavier RC Primary School.
The new Junior Mayor for 2009/10 is Miss Mhairi McGill of Cathedral Junior School, Hereford.
Junior Mayor-making Ceremony & Robes
Miss Mhairi McGill was installed as the new Junior Mayor for 2009/2010 at a ceremony held on 10th November 2009, which mirrored the real Mayor-making Ceremony, and her classmates came along to see how a Mayor of Hereford is elected and installed. For the official ceremony she wore a real Mayor’s robes and hat, and his badge of office was specially made and sponsored by the Hereford Times. Jane, her family, and her class learnt a lot about the history and traditions of the City of Hereford.
