A Thriving City

Hereford Cathedral

Hereford is a thriving City, situated on the banks of the beautiful river Wye. Hereford jealously guards its ancient heritage of medieval architecture and quaint streets, which follow the original medieval pattern. The economy of Hereford is still largely associated with the surrounding countryside – apples, hops, Wye salmon, vegetables and the white faced ‘Hereford’ cattle, which are known worldwide. The Wye, one of the least polluted of British rivers, flows through the middle of the City and attracts canoeists and anglers from far and wide; the Hereford Regatta, traditionally held on the Spring Bank Holiday Monday, attracts crews from all over Britain and is one of the top events of its kind.

The City is well known for its colleges – The Royal National College for the Blind, The Hereford College of Technology and the College of Art and Design.

In the heart of the City the Maylord Shopping Centre provides the opportunity to shop in an area free of traffic noise and exhaust fumes; This centre opens out onto High Town, where the ancient Black & White House Museum stands and onto which opens the Butter Market with its range of stalls, selling dairy products, fruit, vegetables, meat, plants, clothes and electrical goods, all housed under one roof. Hereford stands at the western edge of Herefordshire, a county of 2,200 square kilometres, and is easily accessible to lovely countryside of the Welsh Marches. City status is not by virtue of its ancient Cathedral (1012-1015) but through a Royal Charter (possibly 1154 from Henry 1st). The City is easily accessible from Cardiff, Newport, Bristol, Birmingham, Worcester, Gloucester, Cheltenham and Shrewsbury, which are all within a 60 miles radius and from which there are rail and road links.

Community Group sub site info

Welcome to the HerefordCity Community page.

If you are interested in taking up sub-sites please contact Dave Piears either by telephone (01432 260456 mornings) or by e-mail ( treasurer@herefordcitycouncil.gov.uk ).

A number of community groups have expressed interest in operating a sub-site. The following list will give an indication of the range of community groups expected to become involved:

Hereford City Partnership

Hinton Community Association

Newton Farm Community Association

Hereford in Bloom

Hereford Twinning Association

North Tupsley Community Association

The sub-site facility is available at a nominal cost of £60 for the first 12 months and is not expected to rise above £100 for subsequent years. Each sub-site will have its own administrator to manage and develop it; they will access the facility via an identification and password supplied by the main administrator.

Each sub-site will operate as a ‘stand alone’ site within the community of HerefordCity. New facilities will become available, free of charge, as they are developed. Training in administrative tasks will be provided.

Each Community Group will be able to provide ‘member only’ access to parts of its sub-site; this will entail its members ‘registering’ with the sub-site. Each sub-site will have a ‘home’ page plus Documents, Events, Links, Map, Media Album, Members, News, Notice Board, surveys and data-base pages. Text, images, links etc., are all available and button names can be altered to suit the community group’s requirements. Each sub-site can have up to three data-bases and construct up to three surveys of its membership(surveys includes full analysis facilities). A 44 page help is available to all administrators to assist them in developing and managing their sub-site.

Sub-site administrators and their Community Group will be bound by the terms and conditions of the HerefordCity site and will be monitored by the main administrator.
